My soapbox

I've been thinking a lot lately about domestic violence. It's everywhere in the news right now - or so it seems. I had a conversation this week with the he-ex about our marriage. He doesn't believe that there was any abuse at all and his story is that during our physical altercations, he was trying to restrain me from hurting him! Why then, was I always the one with my back in a corner?

DeAnn's blog made me think about my first wedding vows. I believed that everything was going to be like a fairy tale and we were going to live happily ever after - but when I look back now at what I said, I think I was proclaiming, "I will be your doormat. Feel free to boss me around and make decisions for me. I will not think for myself." At least, I'm sure that's what he heard me say.

I am so blessed now to be married to a man who respects me. We make decisions together and give each other space to be ourselves. He would never swear at me, call me useless or raise a hand to me. He doesn't play mind games. This is the kind of relationship that every woman deserves. Don't settle for less.
